Switch Wacker

I consider myself a relatively in shape guy. I don't work out any more, have a pretty slim physique, but was in an infantry unit in the army so did my fare share of PT when I was younger. I can walk miles with heavy equipment on my back and not need to break for water, even now. I go hiking occasionally. I'm like a Camel or a donkey, but not an ox. But the other day I tested my endurance with a Ryobi 17-Inch 30cc 1 HP Gas-Powered Curved-Shaft String Trimmer while at my buddies house helping him trim his lawn. Now its only a 13lb or so piece - so it ain't the heaviest thing that's on the market. But it must have been either the handling, the fact it was fully gassed or maybe since I missed breakfast and we were approaching noon - my arm started to go.

And - my friends got a pretty decent size lawn. So At around 11:30 I had to take a break and put the string trimmer down, only to feel my wrists were so sore and my arms felt paralyzed. Has this ever happened to me before???? Yeah maybe when I was younger and first picked up a weed eater and started weed wacking my parents lawn growing up. You have to really brake in your muscles while handling a a weed wacker for any serious length of time.

But that was years ago and here I am with a medium weight weed wacker, and I am no rookie. Couldn't figure it out. But what I did figure out was that if I wanted to look like a real sissy and leave my buddy high and dry wirth only half of his lawn done, I would have called it a day. Instead I switched hands like a switch hitter. Started whacking lefty. And did a pretty decent job at it too.

So if your new to using a string trimmer, have a hefty old beast , or are nearing the age when it might make sense just to hire a landscaper than my suggestion is to learn how to wack with both arms.

It might come in real handy one day.

What is the real name......................?

So there has been much debate recently on the word "string trimmer". Some call them weed eaters and other call the weed wackers. Some spell weed wacker with the correct spelling of whacker, others don't. Some say, brush cutter, line trimmer, weed trimmer and more. So I decided to shed a little lite into all this to figure the real name and where it came from.

The weed eater was actually the first named used after it was invented by George Ballas in the early 1970's. Ballas was annoyed while he mowed his lawn and couldn't get some areas with his lawn mower. The story goes that through his frustration of getting on his knees to hand cut the weeds in these hard to reach areas, Ballas thought about how he could take care of these areas lawncare without ruining his lawn or mower.

Than one day he was at a car wash and noticed the spinning plastic wheels that gently brushed his vwhicle while spinning, and cleaning his car, and thought that this motion might be the answer to his weed problem in his lawn.

The difference between and electric and gas powered string trimmer

$100 is the difference. Just kidding. Some might say, gas powered weed wackers hurt the environment since they use gas and oil, and those who are conscious of the environment are gonna buy the electric operated weed wackers. So does that make anyone with an electric weed wacker a sissy? Well, heck - my drill is battery operated - so how wimpy can an electric weed wacker over a gas weed wacker really be? To answer that question, have you ever seen an electric Toyota? Some of the first hybrid models that came out years ago? Compare that to a Chevy Tahoe. Okay - I know your gonna say that there is an hybrid Chevrolet Tahoe already, but that's not "all" electric - lets face it. Someday there might be and I am not knocking the concept at large. I am more for the use of natural energy and the abandonment on foreign oil dependence because of just that - we are dependant! And some of these nations that we are so dependant on, quite frankly are not our friends. So to create motors that can run on electric power, solar power, etc.. is a step in the right direction for me, but there is still a long road ahead of us.

I love the smell of gas.......

I really do......

I cant imagine life without it.......

But here we are moving away from it, and I still mix my weed wackers gas with oil 40/1. I like that smell too. So what is the real difference between gas and electric besides $100?

Power.

Time to break out that weed eater!

There is nothing more exhilarating than pulling the choke of a freshly primed weed eater. Think I'm a little crazy? Maybe. I love looking for new weeded areas that I might have missed in my yard, days after I mowed and trimmed, just so I have an excuse to go back to the garage and pull out my weed wacker. Maybe a little bizarre. Who knows. Some ppl enjoy working in their yard, planting, pruning, raking, watering, etc... Not me. I only like to cut grass and whack weeds. Maybe I left a little strip in the fence corner, better go take care of that weed growth! See ya!
